Today’s Passage: Exodus 24
Today, we discover that God has feet.
Once God has finished telling the Law out loud to him, Moses goes back to the people of Israel and tells it to them. Sidenote: he writes it down after telling it to them verbally, not before (3); color me impressed. After the people worship, Moses ascends the mountain with Aaron, his two sons Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders, and it’s there that they see God.
What does God look like? The text doesn’t say directly. But it tells us this much: “They saw the God of Israel; and under His feet there appeared to be a pavement of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself” (10). God, evidently still inside the thick cloud concealing the mountain’s heights, has himself a big ol’ sky walkway made out of at least something resembling precious gemstones made of aluminium oxide if not actual sapphires themselves. And he is standing on it with his feet.
I don’t know what you make of that, especially if you believe, as I do, that God is an omnipotent spirit, and that before the universe began, he had no corporeal body. Before the universe began, there was no matter for corporeal bodies even to be made of; there was only God. Yet here God is, with feet, and presumably a body to match. And you know who else has a body? Jesus Christ.
I could leave you with that, but I’ll make one more note. Remember these cats, Nadab and Abihu. They come back around.
